Pricing & discount

The clearing lever we can pull directly: price and discount. Sell-through by band, where each band sits, and the honest question underneath — is discount buying clearance, or leaking margin on leads that supply, not price, would fix? Clearing here is about driving revenue; whether the discount is worth it in margin terms is Profitability.

Sell-through by price band — and how it's moving

This week. Sell-through falls hard as price rises — budget 88% on ~1% discount, premium and top at 0% — and the 'vs avg' columns say the dear bands aren't improving. But note what this does not tell you: a single 18–22% discount that failed to clear says nothing about whether 10% would do the same, or whether 40% would clear it. On its own this is suggestive, not conclusive — the observed response below (what happened at the discounts we've actually tried) is what separates price from supply. What it does flag cleanly is the mid band: 6% off on leads already clearing 60% is margin worth a look. · AI stub

Where each band sits — the clearing quadrant

This week. Under £50 and £50–70 sit top-left — the sweet spot, clearing well on little discount (and the £50–70 band's 6% may even be sheddable). £70–90 and £90+ sit bottom-right — we're already spending 18–22% and they clear nothing, and the bubbles are big because that's where the unsold demand piles up. So what: the North Star is every band top-left, and you don't get the dear ones there by discounting harder — that just drags them to top-right, buying clearance you pay for. You get them there with supply, so they clear near full price. Supply is how a band actually reaches the sweet spot; discount is at best a stopgap — and, as the observed response below shows, one we haven't yet found working on the dear bands. · AI stub

Discount per band — what we've actually tried

This week. The discount is going where the problem is — budget and mid stay at 1–6%, while premium and top have crept up to 18–22% as we've pushed to clear them. So what: we've steadily discounted the dear bands harder across the quarter. Whether that bought anything is the next chart. · AI stub

Did the discount move them? — lead by lead

This week (recent leads pooled). The clustering is the opposite of 'discount clears leads'. The leads that cleared (green) sit bottom-left — cheap, little or no discount; the ones that didn't (grey) sit top-right — dear, and heavily discounted. So what: we apply discount to exactly the leads that don't clear, and it isn't moving them — discount here is a response to non-clearing, not a driver of it. That's what this shows that the trend above can't. The honest next step is the experiment — deliberately push a deep discount on a few dear leads to see if any depth flips grey to green — or accept it's supply and stop discounting into the wall. · AI stub

The discount bill — are we buying clearance we're not getting?

This week. The discount bill is up to ~£99 a week and ~£9 per cleared lead — about a sixth off every lead that sells, and both still climbing. So what: we're discounting deeper to hold volume, but from the band table none of it is unlocking the premium leads that need supply, not price. So the extra margin is leaking two ways — onto mid-band leads that were clearing anyway, and onto premium leads discount can't move. Redirect it: hold discount on the bands that clear, stop chasing the ones supply can't serve, and put the saving into recruiting that supply. · AI stub
